Our Story
Our histories shape how we see ourselves and the world, grounding us in a strong sense of identity. The Flame Tree Collective exists to share the depth and global impact of Black history with people of all backgrounds through dynamic workshops, courses and events — including programmes for schools.
We spotlight the powerful stories of Africa and its diaspora, from leaders and innovators to everyday people whose influence continues to shape our world. By amplifying voices too often overlooked, we offer a richer, more balanced understanding of history while challenging stereotypes and celebrating Africa’s heritage in all its complexity.
Founded in 2020 by Ayo Haynes — whose mixed heritage and upbringing in northern Nigeria inspired a lifelong passion for African and Black diasporan history — the Flame Tree Collective began with online workshops during lockdown and has since grown into in‑person courses and workshops, special events and the Diasporan Stories podcast.
Our purpose is to enlighten, inspire and empower. Today, we are one of the UK’s leading organisations for Black history education, creating experiences that inform, uplift and spark curiosity. Explore our programmes to see how we can support your learning journey.

Elon Musk may be the world's richest man today but the richest man to have EVER lived was Mansa Musa, ruler of the West African Empire of Mali. He had a net worth of $400 billion and lived in the 14th century.
The Flame Tree Collective exists to share facts like this and more!
The African Kings & Queens workshop opened my class's eyes to rulers they had not heard of, yet felt instantly connected to. It really made history feel personal and come alive.
