The Story of Africa
This course is held over 6 sessions of 2 hours each and will give an overview of Africa’s history from the dawn of time until the modern era. The course highlights several kingdoms and empires across the continent and looks at the effects of colonialism on present day Africa.
African Influences
This course looks at influences from the continent of Africa that have impacted the World: music (jazz, blues, hiphop), art (modernism), architecture, geography (amazon, sahara, currents), genetics, language (folktales), cuisine (spices, ingredients), hairstyles (braids, locs, fros), ancient (metallurgy, maths, medicine) etc.
This course explores the Golden Age of Africa. Between the 9th and 16th centuries, powerful kingdoms and empires flourished, trade routes carried African goods and ideas across the continent and out to the wider world.

Make History come to life with these Sankofa Sunday ‘Ancient African Kingdoms: From Pharaohs to Empires’ children workshops led by Charmaine Simpson of Black History Studies.
These workshops aim to dispel misconceptions, foster appreciation, and celebrate the rich cultural and historical legacy of Africa. By delving into the origins of human civilization, the great empires, and the diverse contributions of African societies, we can gain a deeper understanding of the continent’s significance in shaping the world we live in today. Let us embark on this enlightening journey together and celebrate the enduring spirit of Africa.
Each workshop will last 1.5 hours from 12:00 to 13:30 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
The workshops are aimed at young people aged 8 – 16 years old.
These workshops will be online using Zoom webinar. Please ensure that your device can support Zoom.
We like to keep the workshops interactive so ask if you can put your camera on.

Tickets for each workshop cost £6.00.
